Following proper care after tonsillectomy plays an important role in reducing pain, preventing bleeding, and speeding up recovery.
Post-Tonsillectomy Care Instructions
🛌 Rest
- Have relative rest for the first 3–5 days after surgery.
- Avoid heavy physical activities, exercise, and lifting heavy objects for at least 2 weeks.
🍦 Diet
- During the first few days, consume only cool liquids such as cold water, strained fruit juice, plain ice cream, and jelly.
- Then gradually introduce soft and cool or lukewarm foods such as strained soup, mashed potatoes, and yogurt.
- Avoid hot, spicy, hard, sour, and heavily seasoned foods for 10–14 days.
- Do not use a straw, as suction may cause bleeding.
💊 Medications
- Take painkillers exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
- Acetaminophen (Paracetamol) is usually allowed.
- Avoid using Aspirin or Ibuprofen unless approved by your physician, as they may increase the risk of bleeding.
🩸 Bleeding
- Small blood streaks in saliva can be normal.
- In case of active or continuous bleeding, seek emergency medical care immediately.
- Avoid spitting and forceful coughing.
😷 Oral Care and Breathing
- Bad breath is common and usually resolves within 7–10 days.
- Gently rinse the mouth with plain water (avoid vigorous gargling).
- Mouth breathing is normal during the first few days.
🌡 Fever and Pain
- Mild fever up to 38°C (100.4°F) is normal.
- Throat, ear, or jaw pain is common and may last up to 10 days.
🚭 Important Notes
- Smoking and hookah use are strictly prohibited.
- Avoid very hot or dry environments.
- Drink plenty of fluids to prevent throat dryness.
⏰ Healing Time
- A white coating over the surgical site is normal and not a sign of infection.
- Complete healing usually occurs within 10–14 days.
